The St. Stephen’s Armenian Elementary School (SSAES) of Watertown, Massachussetts this week announced that its campus expansion construction project, launched on June 15, 2012, was completed on August 31, and met the school’s goal of opening for the 2012-13 academic year. The Grand Opening Ceremony for the expanded building will take place on-site at 46 Elton Ave. in Watertown on Sunday, October 14 at 12 p.m.
The expansion, which is the largest building project supporting the Greater-Boston Armenian community over the last 20 years, cost approximately $1.37 million and includes the addition of a new, 6,000+ sq. ft., two-story structure encompassing new classrooms, a learning center, and indoor and outdoor recreation areas. Its completion represents a great milestone in the school’s history, allowing it to further enhance its core offering with dedicated classrooms for Armenian, Reading, STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) instruction, and more.
“A further enriched SSAES experience today delivers better-prepared students tomorrow, which was the primary goal of the expansion,” said Houry Boyamian, the school’s principal. The additional space will allow the school to better meet the community’s growing educational demands by increasing its enrollment capacity.
The project was fully funded by generous donations from the community, with the majority of the funds raised in 2012. “We are very grateful to our donors, many of whom are longtime supports of the school, and contributed to making this project a reality,” said Dr. Avak Kahvejian, chairman of the board of directors. “Thanks to their immediate, generous financial support, the school did not have to use its endowment fund or incur any debt to finance this significant construction project.”
The school will mark the official opening of the building on October 14, with a ribbon-cutting and donor recognition ceremony, presided by His Eminence, Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan, Prelate of the Eastern Prelacy. The entire community is invited to join the celebration.
The St. Stephen’s Armenian Elementary School was founded in 1984. The school has distinguished itself with its bilingual curriculum, academic strength, devoted staff, and low student-to-teacher ratio. SSAES is the only Armenian day school to be fully accredited by the Association of Independent Schools in New England (AISNE), the accrediting body for independent elementary schools. AISNE has commended the school for “creating an environment where all the students love to read and appear committed to academic excellence,” and for recruiting a remarkably talented and dedicated staff. The AISNE accreditation puts SSAES academically on par with other prestigious private schools in the region.
