ARS Eastern USA Announces Essay Contest Winners

More than 120 students from Armenian schools across the East Coast participated in the Armenian Relief Society (ARS) Eastern USA’s annual essay contest this year, which addressed the question, “If you could go back in time, which historic Armenian figure would you want to meet, and why?” The full results are below.
The ARS sponsors the contest for Armenian day and one-day students to encourage them to think about topics of importance to the Armenian people, and how these issues impact their young lives.
Participating Armenian one-day schools were Haigazian School in Philadelphia, Pa.; Marzbed Saturday School, Racine, Wisc.; Mourad Saturday School, Providence, R.I.; Nareg Saturday School, New Jersey; St. Stephen’s Saturday School, Watertown, Mass.; Taniel Varoujan School, Glenview, Ill.; and Zavarian Saturday School, Detroit, Mich.
Participating Armenian day schools were Armenian Sisters’ Academy in Lexington, Mass., and the St. Stephen’s Elementary School in Watertown, Mass.
The judging committee was comprised of members from the Detroit ARS chapters, appointed by the ARS Eastern USA Board of Regional Directors; they were Hermine Manoogian, Sona Mishigian, Hourig Jacobs, Yeretsgin Tamar Kevorkian, Annette Cholakian, Donna Katcherian, Lecia Yangoyian, Sandi Magar, Roxeann Kourdjian, and Karen Walker. The committee was led by Ani Attar.
Contest rules permit students to write their essay in English or Armenian. Students compete according to their grade and day school or one-day school participation. Essays written in Armenian and English are judged separately. The students’ names are not disclosed to the essay contest judges.
Winners are awarded Barnes and Noble gift certificates. The ARS Eastern USA Board of Regional Directors extends hearty congratulations to all of the students for devoting time and effort to the ARS Eastern USA Essay Contest, and sends its continued gratitude to the principals and teachers for their participation in this mutually beneficial educational effort.
