Ազգային Ուսումնական Խորհուրդի ուսուցչական սեմինարը Նիւ Եորքի մէջ

Շաբաթ, Հոկտեմբեր 1ին, Արեւելեան Միացեալ Նահանգներու տարբեր քաղաքներէ ժամանած ուսուցիչներ, տնօրէններ եւ խնամակալ մարմնի անդամներ մասնակցեցան Ազգային Ուսումնական Խորհուրդի կազմակերպած սեմինարին։ Իրենց մասնակցութիւնը բերին հետեւեալ ամէնօրեայ եւ շաբաթօրեայ դպրոցները. Սարգիս եկեղեցւոյ «Շուշան եւ Յովսէփ Յակոբեան» վարժարան (Նիւ Եորք), «Նարեկ» վարժարան (Նիւ Ճըրզի), Հայ Քոյրերու Վարժարան (Ֆիլատելֆիա), «Հայկազեան» վարժարան (Ֆիլատելֆիա), Հ.Օ.Մ.ի «Զաւարեան» վարժարան (Տիթրոյիթ) եւ «Դանիէլ Վարուժան» վարժարան (Շիքակօ)։ Սեմինարը տեղի ունեցաւ Ազգ. Առաջնորդարանին մէջ, Նիւ Եորք։

ANEC Holds Armenian School Teacher’s Seminar in New York

On Saturday, October 1 teachers of Armenian day and Saturday schools from cities in the Eastern USA gathered at the Eastern Prelacy offices in New York City to discuss current issues in Armenian education such as access to material and common challenges faced in schools in general. The event was organized by the Armenian National Education Committee (ANEC), a joint venture of the Eastern Prelacy and the Armenian Relief Society (ARS) Eastern USA. The following schools participated: Saint Illuminator’s Armenian Day School, Holy Martyrs Armenian Day School, St. Sarkis Suzanne and Hovsep Hagopian Saturday School (New York), Nareg Saturday School (New Jersey), Haigazian Armenian School (Philadelphia), Armenian Sisters Academy (Philadelphia), ARS Zavarian Schools (Detroit), and Taniel Varoujan Armenian School (Chicago).

How to Stop the Drop in Verbal Scores

The following op-ed article, published in the September 19, 2011 issue of  "The New York Times," refers to the new decline in reading and writing scores on the SATs. The reason for this continuing decline since the 1970s seems to be, according to the most credible analyses, "vast curricular changes, especially in the critical early grades." Language competence needs to be restored in early childhood years, in order to evolve at a reasonable pace in later years. A similar analysis may also be helpful to understand the need to enrich Armenian language skills from an early stage, if we interpret "low-income children," in our case, as children with little or no knowledge of the language from home.
